Advice on Working in the U.S.
In 2006, RefugeeWorks surveyed the national refugee employment network about the advice employers give to newly arrived refugees during pre-employment orientation sessions. The following are the common themes gathered from the 200 responses. We encourage you to think about these as you approach a new employer.
- Attitude: A good attitude is as important as good skills.
- Time: Be on time for work and call your supervisor if you are going to miss work.
- Appearance: Maintain a professional appearance and practice good hygiene.
- Dependable: The best employees are those who are dependable, reliable and flexible.
- Safety: Safety on the job is very important. Follow safety guidelines.
- Supervision: Ask your direct supervisor when you are unsure about a task.
- Team Work: Productive employees are able to work well in a team environment.
- English: Continually practice your English and enroll in ESL classes.
- Loyalty: Stay at your job at least six months and give two weeks notice before quitting.
- Promotion: Promotions are based on how well you work, not your length of service.
