RefugeeWorks,
a Program of LIRS
RefugeeWorks was established in 1997 as a program of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS). For ten years, we have served not only the LIRS network, but all the national refugee resettlement organizations.
LIRS Mission
In response to God’s love in Christ, we welcome the stranger, bringing new hope and new life through ministries of service and justice.
LIRS Vision
We envision a world where all communities welcome refugees and migrants. Working in global partnerships and with faith based communities, we welcome a transformation of our communities and ourselves when we receive the gifts of refugees and migrants, and draw strengthen and inspiration from diversity. We see ourselves as catalysts and conveners in the world of building welcoming communities, creating and sustaining opportunities for our partners to engage in ministries of services and justice.
LIRS HistoryLIRS was established in 1939 as the Nazi government in Germany unleashed World War II, Lutherans in the United States formed a cooperative program based in New York City to help Lutheran refugees from Europe who managed to escape to this country. That fall a fund drive for the new program asked Lutheran congregations to join in giving refugees “a whole chance at life.”
Over six decades the basic mission of what came to be called Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service has never changed. It is now expressed similarly in the signature line, “Bringing New Hope and New Life.” How the mission is carried out, however, has developed significantly. And that makes a big difference in the daily lives of many uprooted people, whatever their label. LIRS rejoices in every new phase of our life in mission during more than 60 years of Bringing New Hope and New Life. |
